Picture
Motorists will experience traffic delays at Kedy's Bridge on Monday, September 13, 2021. Traffic services will be on site to assist with traffic control while Town crews remove a large dead tree which has become a safety issue.

Work will begin around 9am and is expected to last a few hours.

Traffic Disruption & Tree Removal

8/27/2021

September 7th starting at 7am

There is a very large dead tree on Main Street that is being removed on Sunday, September 5th. Due to the size and condition of the tree traffic will be detoured via Fairmont Road and Pleasant Street for this job but we do expect to be able to open one lane of traffic before we are completely finished.

Due to the need to avoid vehicular and pedestrian traffic work will begin at 7am. We remind everyone that this tree removal will be an active and dangerous work site and that the public must stay back from the site for everyone's safety.

Electric Utility Tree Maintenance

8/5/2021

Town staff were pleased to meet with Talking Trees to discuss upcoming tree maintenance to keep the electric utility lines clear while contributing to the long-term health of our tree canopy.

This year you'll notice that the line trimming will be done a little differently. Best practices for clearing lines indicate the importance of cutting close to the trunk of the tree. This is the healthiest option for the tree, and it prevents the growth of "suckers", or tiny new limbs, which will create the need to keep cutting the tree to keep lines clear. A close cut allows the tree to heal and adapt its growth.

The Town's tree contractor will soon be clearing lines in the areas of Spruce St, Pine Grove St, Fauxburg Rd, Pond St, Hedge Row, and between Orchard St and Edgewater St. Downed limbs and trees are the most common cause of power outages in Mahone Bay; routine trimming maintains a safe space around power lines and prevents the need to remove overgrown trees.

Bayview Cemetery Trees

7/9/2021

The Town has identified several dead and dangerous trees in Bayview Cemetery which must be removed swiftly and carefully. We were pleased that representatives from Talking Trees met with us at the cemetery as staff and the Town’s contractor discussed the trees that need to be removed, replanting, and even the start of a long-term plan for tree maintenance in the cemetery.

Our tree crew is planning to conduct this work over two weekends, doing their best to get work done before traffic reaches its peak. Traffic is a consideration in this location so work will begin at around 7am and we expect that it will need to wrap up around 10:00 or 11:00am, based on traffic flow.

In total, six dead trees will be removed. Two trees will be replaced, one at the fence line behind the Visitor Information Centre and one in the centre of the cemetery (not in the same place, but in an available space in the same general area). The remaining four trees will not be replaced at this time after an inspection showed that the healthiest thing for the existing trees is to allow them to thrive with the reduced competition for resources – we look forward to watching them get big and strong.

The Town has been discussing trees as part of our natural assets for several years and while we continue our research and discussion about what it looks like to respect this natural asset, it is a fact that part of living with trees as an integrated part of our urban environment is the need to maintain trees; that means trimming, thinning, re-planting, and even removing trees when necessary.

We ask that residents remember that multiple experts have been consulted about the need for these trees to be removed, and that this is a work site that is dangerous for the tree removal crews – these dead trees are dangerous which means that their removal will be dangerous. Please stay clear of the worksite for everyone’s safety.
