TOWN OF MAHONE BAY COUNCIL
Mahone Bay Town Council consists of 7 members. A Mayor and six councillors (one of whom serves as Deputy Mayor). All members of Council are elected at large and represent the entire community, there are no polling districts.
Elections take place every four years unless a vacancy occurs, in which case a special election must be held.

MAYOR DAVID DEVENNE
Originally from Halifax, David chose to live in Mahone Bay in 1998 in preparation for retirement from a 40-year career in the federal Public Service. He was first elected to Council in 2008 and was appointed as the deputy mayor. He was re-elected in 2012, and again appointed deputy mayor. As the deputy mayor, he was involved in many of the committees of Council as well as collaborating on many inter-municipal committees. David was the long-time Chairman of the Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Society with responsibility for the Classic Boat Festival and the Civic Marina. More recently, Mayor Devenne has been involved with the Father Christmas Festival.

DEPUTY MAYOR FRANCIS KANGATA
, A resident of Mahone Bay since 2011, Francis Kangata has lived and worked in 3 different continents. A father of two (Naomi and Mayah) and husband to Simone (a former Town Councillor), Francis has a background in international development, education and health promotion. He works full time in health promotion within a mental health and addictions setting and devotes his spare time to expanding his business interests and contributing to the South Shore community through volunteerism.

COUNCILLOR PENNY CARVER
Born in Montreal, Penny raised her family in Ottawa, and has worked as a teacher, educational consultant, and social worker. After many summers in Nova Scotia, Penny moved to Lunenburg County in 1995, settling in Mahone Bay in 2004. She’s served on the boards of Second Story Women’s Centre, Bluenose Golf Club, the Mahone Bay Centre, and Community Links, a provincial group supporting “ageing well together.” She is a founding member of Mahone Bay’s “Talking Trees.” Penny has two daughters and five grandchildren living in Halifax and Toronto. Re-elected to a third Council term in 2020, Penny has served on the Facilities Working Group, Website Working Group, Heritage Advisory Committee, Age Friendly Community Advisory Committee, and Watershed Advisory Committee, and currently the Climate & Environment Advisory Committee and Nominating Committee. External appointments have included the South Shore Housing Action Coalition, Lunenburg County Seniors’ Safety Partnership Society, Lunenburg County Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee, Physician Recruitment Group and Inter-municipal Transportation Committee

COUNCILLOR JOSEPH FEENEY
Joseph Maxwell Feeney has been a resident of Mahone Bay since 1978 and is a first-time candidate for the Mahone Bay Town Council. He long been interested in municipal affairs and a keen observer of critical issues affecting the community, while watching his father serve as Mayor of the Town for six terms.
He was educated at Mount Allison and Dalhousie Universities and is a Chartered Professional Accountant. For the past sixteen years, he has worked within Bell Canada and its predecessor companies (Aliant, MT&T) finance department and is currently the Senior Manager of Bell Canada’s Business Decision Support team that has responsibility to complete financial analysis on corporate investments and strategies. Previous to his time at Bell, he worked for the Provincial Government’s Department of Economic Development and the Nova Scotia Business Development Corporation. Joe and his wife Mary Ann have two teenage daughters who attend Parkview Education Center. COUNCILLOR SUZANNE LOHNES-CROFT
Suzanne Lohnes-Croft was raised in Mahone Bay. After attending Mount Saint Vincent University and working briefly in HRM she and her husband returned to Mahone Bay, so that their three sons could grow up here, in the town they love.
While raising her boys, Suzanne volunteered extensively in the community. Everything from coaching sports and chairing the Town’s Sustainability Committee, to singing in choirs and serving on the board of the Mahone Bay Centre. In 2010 she received the Provincial Volunteer Award for the Town of Mahone Bay. In 2013 she was nominated as a candidate for the position of Member of the Nova Scotia Legislature and served in that position until 2021. COUNCILLOR RICHARD NOWE
Richard Nowe has lived in Mahone Bay all his life. He is retired from Canada Post after serving in several positions from Mahone Bay to Hubbards. Richard spends most of his time now volunteering having been a member of Mahone Bay and District Fire Department for over 43 years including 8 years as the Fire Chief. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Mahone Bay & Area Food Bank and a member of the Mahone Bay Area Lions Club. The swimming pool and Tiny Tots playground are two of the projects which are close to his heart helping both anyway he can. He and his wife Cathie have 2 grown children living in New Brunswick and the Northwest Territories.

COUNCILLOR KELLY WILSON
Kelly is a long time resident of Mahone Bay who, during the course of more than twenty years, has been an active volunteer in many community organizations and has had a previous role in municipal government as a councillor from 2012 to 2016.
A former operations executive in the food and beverage business Kelly has had the privilege of working in every province in Canada, except PEI, as well as assignments in southern Africa, Asia, and Australia. Kelly and his wife and partner of more than forty years share their home on the banks of the Mush-a-Mush River waiting for the day when they can visit their daughters in Italy and Australia (and their Australian grand-sons).
