Next Council Café

3/3/2026

Our next Council Café is on Thursday March 12 from 11 a.m. - 12 noon at Town Hall. Mayor Lohnes-Croft will be welcoming new Councillors Katherine McCarron and Kevin Boon.

And to celebrate International Women’s Day (belatedly), we’re excited to share that our neighbour Lady Spillington will be joining us as a special guest. She’ll be reading a few light-hearted notes from her community column, Teacup Tattler, and bringing plenty of charm and cheer with her.

It’s sure to be a fun Council Café as we come together to celebrate women and their achievements. Everyone is welcome!

Edgewater Landscape Working Group

3/3/2026

This morning, the Edgewater Landscape Working Group met again. We had a fantastic and productive conversation about next steps on the Edgewater Project!

An engaged group of passionate and knowledgeable residents joined the Town team, Coastal Action, and our Project and Construction Managers to explore destination nodes, conceptual ideas, and themes for the Edgewater landscape plan.

There was strong support for a naturalized planting approach with clear ecological considerations including hardy, drought and deer-resistant native plants, pollinator species, decorative blooming trees, and selections that provide year-round interest. Planting in clusters and phased testing of new plants rooting, surviving and thriving was also recommended.

We also discussed salt-tolerant plants for the vegetated embankment and lessons from the Living Shoreline project, thoughtful placement of lawns or low-maintenance groundcover, and practical considerations like ground grub infestations, salt, snow load, watering, maintenance and pruning.

The conversation also covered welcoming features such as art installations, lighting, interpretive signage, accessibility, seating, and shaded areas all aimed at creating a vibrant, usable waterfront for exercise, play, and relaxation.

Thank you to this dedicated committee for your time, energy, and commitment to beautifying and naturalizing Edgewater. It’s inspiring to have your perspectives and experience at the table!

Uncovering Fire Hydrants

3/3/2026

With the heavy winter snows we're having, some fire hydrants are hidden under a blanket of white. And buried fire hydrants can slow down emergency response when every second counts.

So, if you’re able, please take a few extra minutes to dig out the fire hydrant near your home. Clear about 3 feet around it and make a path from the road so it’s easy to access. This small act of kindness could make a life-saving difference.

Thank you to everyone who’s already been out there shovelling not just their driveways, but helping others too. That’s what community is all about.

The Order of Nova Scotia

3/3/2026

25 years recognizing excellence.

Mayor Suzanne Lohnes-Croft is encouraging organizations and community leaders across Mahone Bay to help celebrate the very best of our community by nominating an extraordinary individual for the Order of Nova Scotia.

As the highest honour of the Province of Nova Scotia, the Order recognizes Nova Scotians whose outstanding contributions and achievements have brought distinction, pride, and prestige to our province. Established in 2001, it shines a light on individuals who exemplify excellence, leadership, compassion, and dedication in their fields and in their communities.

Any Canadian citizen who is a present or former long-term resident of Nova Scotia may be nominated. (Public officials such as Senators, MPs, MLAs, municipal councillors, or judges are not eligible while in office.) The honour may also be awarded posthumously, provided the nomination is submitted within one year of the individual’s passing. Please note: nominations are for individuals only, not couples, groups, or organizations.

This is an opportunity to recognize someone who truly reflects the heart, spirit, and strength of Mahone Bay. If you know an individual whose impact has been remarkable and lasting, now is the time to share their story and ensure their contributions are honoured at the highest provincial level.

Let’s come together to celebrate those who make our community and our province exceptional. Have someone excellent in mind: the closing date for nominations is Thursday, April 30th and forms can be found here: https://novascotia.ca/.../Order-of-Nova%20Scotia...
