Town Hall will delay opening until 10am today Tuesday January 27, 2026. Staff will work from home where possible until then,
Due to the continuing winter storm, Town Hall will remain closed today, January 26, 2026.
Staff will be working from home where possible. We understand that many residents have had questions about recent recycling and sorting changes. We appreciate your patience as we adapt to these changes together.
The good news is that Nova Scotia’s new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program for packaging and paper products means more items can go into your blue bag, including some plastics and packaging that were not accepted before. Under EPR, the cost of recycling is shifted from municipalities to the companies that produce packaging. This helps create a more efficient recycling system and supports waste reduction across the province. To help make these changes easier, here are some simple and helpful tools: Updated Sorting Guide Visit the Region 6 Solid Waste Management website for the most up-to-date sorting information: http://www.region6swm.ca Recycling App Download the Region 6 NS Recycles app on the App Store or Google Play (search: R6RECYCLES). The app lets you: check your garbage and recycling schedule; receive collection reminders; and find sorting information anytime Divert NS sorting Wizard Not sure where an item goes? Use the Divert NS online “Wizard.” Simply type in the item name and it will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it: https://divertns.ca/sorting-guides/lunenburg By using these tools, we can all work together to adapt to the new system and be more environmentally responsible as a community. Thank you for doing your part. Join Mahone Bay Tourism and the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, February 4 at 7:00pm at the Mahone Bay Centre gym for a special election candidates forum.
Hear directly from the five candidates running for the two open Town of Mahone Bay councillor seats. Questions can be submitted in advance to [email protected], and there will be time for questions from the audience. As of the close of Nomination Day (January 20) the following candidates were declared for the Town of Mahone Bay 2026 Special Municipal Election:
For the Office of Councillor: Kevin Boon Michelle Gryphon Bill Lewis Katherine McCarron Cathie Slaughenwhite-Nowe The Town will share more details soon about when and how to vote. Everyone on the voters list will receive a Voter Instruction Letter in the mail. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who put their name forward to represent our Town. Annual care and maintenance of street trees is now underway in Mahone Bay. This important work helps keep our trees healthy and reduces safety risks for everyone in the community. While a tree may look healthy from the street, it can sometimes have hidden issues that need attention.
This week, Arbor Plant Health Care will be working on trees on Maple Street on Wednesday, and Tristan from Artreesans will be on Kinburn Street and Spur Street on Thursday. The work may include pruning, adding support cables, and removing trees that are dead or unsafe. This care is especially important as we experience storms with heavy snow and strong winds. If firewood becomes available after the work is completed, we will let residents know where it can be picked up. If you have questions about the tree work or would like to report a street tree of concern, please contact us at [email protected]. A message from REMO:
Utility crews across Lunenburg County continue to work to restore power. If you are without power, please keep these tips in mind, to help you stay safe: • Check on your neighbours, if it's safe to do so. • To conserve your phone’s battery, use text instead of calls. If you do need to make a call, keep it brief. Reduce your phone’s brightness, close apps and stay off social media as much as possible. • Turn off all tools, appliances and electronic equipment, to prevent damage from a power surge when power is restored. Power can be restored more easily when there is not a heavy load on the electrical system. • If the power goes out while you are cooking be sure to turn off the stove and clear the burners and oven to prevent a fire when power is restored. • Don't open your freezer or fridge unless it is absolutely necessary. A full freezer will keep food frozen for 24 to 36 hours if the door remains closed. • Never use charcoal or gas barbecues, camping heating equipment, or home generators indoors or in garages. They give off carbon monoxide. Because you can't smell or see it, carbon monoxide can cause health problems and is life-threatening. • Stay at least 10 meters away from any downed power lines. If you see a downed power line, call Nova Scotia Power at 1-877-428-6004. • Do not remove branches near a power line as the line may be energized and can cause serious harm. • Use proper candle holders. Never leave lit candles unattended and keep them out of reach of children. Always extinguish candles before going to bed. • Listen to your battery-powered or wind-up radio for information on the outage and advice from authorities.
