Tree Identification Event - 10am Friday, August 11th
Next week, Friday August 11th at 10:00 a.m.
Meet at the Jubilee Park Entrance, 6 Pond St. Join us on a tour of the native trees you can find here in Mahone Bay and test your identification skills using our Tree Inventory Map. What to bring? Measuring tape, mobile device, walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, water, friends. This is a great opportunity to practice your tree identification skills, meet other tree enthusiasts, and to learn about the Town’s plans to conserve our canopy! We will go on a casual walk to Bayview Cemetery while highlighting the benefits of the urban forest. Contact [email protected] for more information. See you then! |
Urban Forest Engagement Session - 7pm Wed. August 16th
|
This event will show our progress in mapping the urban forest using our new map and we will chat about how residents can get involved with data collection! Learn about local natural assets, the benefits of the urban forest, and our plans to develop an Urban Forest Management Plan! Join us on August 16th at 7pm in the Community Room at the new Fire Station for this public session. Snacks and refreshments provided! |
What is the Urban Forest?
"Urban forest" simply describes trees within an urban context, which includes both municipally owned and privately owned trees. In Mahone Bay we have our own (more rural) version of urban forest. These trees in our urban center are a natural asset that hold economic value and provide many benefits to us as individuals and to the municipality. Increasing our commitment to managing our urban forest can help to reduce run-off, prevent coastal erosion, help reduce atmospheric carbon, cut energy costs by providing our town with shade and wind-barriers, plus the benefits of added oxygen, tourism, and even food.

Interactive Tree Inventory Map
Join the Town of Mahone Bay in doing an inventory of our trees!
Create an account, log in, and start adding your trees! We need your help in figuring out how many trees we have within the town, where they are, and which species. This map will help us to ensure that our negative impacts on the environment are reduced. Help us limit canopy cover loss, replace trees that die off or are cut down, and identify areas where new trees can be planted. |
Natural Assets Engagement Session
Thank you to everyone who joined us at our May 31st Natural Assets Engagement Session!
With guest speaker Dr. Peter Duinker this session introduced our plans of developing an Urban Forest Management Plan and fostered discussion on the value of trees and other natural assets in the Town of Mahone Bay (wetlands, waterways, shoreline).
Natural Assets Intern is working on the data collection of our natural assets this summer and helping residents to record their trees using the public map.
