During Municipal Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on local government, the level of government closest to home and closest to the people.
Creating more ways for your voice to be heard, Mahone Bay has recently launched our new civic engagement platform Get On Board Mahone Bay! This new online hub makes it easier than ever to ask questions, share ideas, and stay informed. You don’t need to attend a meeting to have your say, just register and join the conversation when it works for you. By using this modern platform, Mahone Bay is joining thousands of communities working to remove barriers to engagement, building trust, and making sure more people can help shape the place we call home. On Get On Board, you can learn about big community projects, catch up on updates, and tell us what matters most to you. Here’s what we’re talking about right now: Edgewater Project: A once-in-a-generation upgrade to one of our most important streets. We’re improving water, sewer, and storm systems, protecting our harbour, adding safer walking and cycling routes, and creating a more accessible, beautiful waterfront. Tell us what features matter most to you and how you hope to use the space! Housing Accelerator: Mahone Bay received over $400,000 to support new housing and affordable options. We’re improving permit systems, reviewing fees, exploring town-owned land, planning for affordable housing, and creating support programs. Developers, builders, and landowners, we want to hear what you need to help bring new homes to our community. Trees of Mahone Bay: Help us protect and grow our urban forest. Suggest tree-planting locations, share concerns about trees needing attention, or tell us where a tree could make your street greener and healthier. Riverport Electric Light Commission: Engagement page hosted by the Town of Mahone Bay for residents within the RELC utility to access useful information, ask questions and contribute to discussions leading up to the Annual General Meeting. Online engagement helps rural communities like ours stay connected, involved, and informed, no matter where you are or how busy life gets. It also leads to better decisions shaped by more voices. Register today at www.getonboardmahonebay.ca If you’re a local partner of the Town’s with a community-wide project in mind, get in touch, we may be able to host your engagement online. Municipal Awareness Week is a time to recognize the essential role local government plays in our everyday lives and to strengthen the relationship between residents and their Town. It’s also a time to celebrate collaboration, service, and community pride. In that spirit, we are thrilled to announce that Town Hall News has gone digital! Each month, we share small successes, celebrate community partnerships, and provide resources and updates on services through our newsletter. Moving to a digital format helps us be more environmentally responsible and cost-efficient, while allowing for timely updates, wider access, and link features to support meaningful community engagement. Sign up on our website homepage: www.townofmahonebay.ca to get November’s Town Hall News delivered straight to your inbox. Prefer a printed copy? Hard copies will be available at Town Hall. You can also keep up with weekly updates on our website homepage, just click on NOTICES! Join us for Council Café Connect To celebrate the digital launch, the Mayor invites you to a special Council Café Connect at Town Hall on Wednesday, November 12 between 11:00 – 12:00 p.m. This informal drop-in event is an opportunity to meet with some of your elected officials, chat about the topics in this month’s Town Hall News, and learn more about how your local government works for you every day. We are neighbours, and our community is shaped by how we show up for one another. By opening Town Hall and creating space for friendly, productive conversation, we are removing barriers and encouraging healthy civic engagement: the heart of Municipal Awareness Week. We’re looking forward to seeing you. The kettle will be on! Every year, November 5 – 11 is Veterans’ Week, a time for Canadians to honour the extraordinary courage and sacrifices of the brave men and women in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) who served, and continue to serve, our country.
Veterans' Week is a time to listen and learn about the experiences of those who lived through war, military missions, and peacekeeping efforts. Their stories remind us of the hardships faced, the sacrifices made, and the achievements that shaped Canada’s history. Our community of Mahone Bay has a proud legacy of service. During both World Wars, many local residents served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, the Army, and the Royal Canadian Air Force. The town also played a key role in shipbuilding, with up to 500 people working in the shipyards to support the war effort. Today, Veterans remain active in missions that protect, support, and strengthen communities across Canada and around the world. Whether filling sandbags during floods, supporting communities after natural disasters, or delivering aid to people in crisis around the world, Veterans continue to make a difference. This week, we raise our flag in gratitude. To all Veterans, thank you for your dedication and your continued contributions to our communities. PHOTOS include: Mike Brown (President), Gary Silliker (Vice-President) and Leah Maloney with The Mahone Bay Legion Branch 49, and Clare Blyth from the Town of Mahone Bay. During Municipal Awareness Week, we celebrate the power of partnerships, inclusivity, and the welcoming spirit that defines Mahone Bay.
Our Town’s Strategic Plan recognizes the importance of meaningful connections, including a warm welcome to those who are new to our community. We’re building toward a future where a welcome begins with a knock on the door, a personal visit from the Mayor or a Councillor, and a refreshed Welcome Pack to help newcomers feel at home in Mahone Bay. Every conversation and decision at Town Hall is guided by one main purpose: serving the people who live, work, operate businesses, and provide services in Mahone Bay. We see all of you as partners in shaping our shared future. We are committed to strengthening a culture of inclusion. That work is already underway through engagement tools like Get on Board Mahone Bay that help everyone join the conversation about our Town’s growth, updated policies and bylaws that reflect modern values, and investments in planning and studies that advance accessibility and adaptability. We’re also working with the Housing Accelerator Fund, which supports new and diverse housing options for our community. Our Grants to Organizations program reflects our commitment to strong partnerships. These investments support arts, culture, and heritage; community beautification and environmental sustainability; community health and wellness; youth and senior programs; and tourism and economic development. And we provide in-kind staff support to share knowledge, build capacity, and work collaboratively with our valued non-profit and community partners in Town. If there’s an event, program, or project happening in Mahone Bay, whether it celebrates our people and heritage, brings neighbours together, welcomes visitors, or supports local business, you will likely find the Town of Mahone Bay cheering it on and helping it succeed. It takes a village they say, and together we are building a thriving, welcoming, and inclusive "village" one partnership, one conversation, and one community effort at a time. Municipal Awareness Week has arrived in Nova Scotia, and we’re excited to highlight the many services, responsibilities, and achievements your Town provides to support our community.
Municipal governments work every day to protect the safety and wellbeing of our communities. As we enter storm season, it’s important for all of us to take simple steps to stay informed, stay prepared, and stay connected. Emergencies can happen quickly, and the more prepared we are, the stronger and more resilient we become as a community. Here’s how you can get storm-ready and support your neighbours: • Sign up for CodeRED alerts on https://public.coderedweb.com/CNE/en-CA/BF457E066E02 to receive emergency updates and important notices for Mahone Bay. • Find updates on https://www.lunenburgremo.ca/ and tune in to 107.9 Go Rock for emergency information, even if the power goes out. You’ll still receive phone alerts and updates online, but radio gives us another reliable way to stay informed. • Save the Mahone Bay after-hours emergency line (pop it on your fridge): 902-543-3251. Our utility staff are on call 24/7. • Build neighbourhood connections. Knowing your neighbours and creating a contact list can help ensure everyone has support for things like heat, power, and wellness checks during storms. Charge your gadgets before a storm is expected. • Create a 72-hour emergency plan and kit. Nova Scotians are encouraged to be prepared to care for themselves, their families, and their pets for at least three days. Planning ahead builds confidence and gives your household peace of mind. Together, we can face storms and emergencies with readiness and strength keeping our community safe, prepared, and connected.
