As of the close of Nomination Day (January 20) the following candidates were declared for the Town of Mahone Bay 2026 Special Municipal Election:
For the Office of Councillor: Kevin Boon Michelle Gryphon Bill Lewis Katherine McCarron Cathie Slaughenwhite-Nowe The Town will share more details soon about when and how to vote. Everyone on the voters list will receive a Voter Instruction Letter in the mail. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who put their name forward to represent our Town. Annual care and maintenance of street trees is now underway in Mahone Bay. This important work helps keep our trees healthy and reduces safety risks for everyone in the community. While a tree may look healthy from the street, it can sometimes have hidden issues that need attention.
This week, Arbor Plant Health Care will be working on trees on Maple Street on Wednesday, and Tristan from Artreesans will be on Kinburn Street and Spur Street on Thursday. The work may include pruning, adding support cables, and removing trees that are dead or unsafe. This care is especially important as we experience storms with heavy snow and strong winds. If firewood becomes available after the work is completed, we will let residents know where it can be picked up. If you have questions about the tree work or would like to report a street tree of concern, please contact us at [email protected]. A message from REMO:
Utility crews across Lunenburg County continue to work to restore power. If you are without power, please keep these tips in mind, to help you stay safe: • Check on your neighbours, if it's safe to do so. • To conserve your phone’s battery, use text instead of calls. If you do need to make a call, keep it brief. Reduce your phone’s brightness, close apps and stay off social media as much as possible. • Turn off all tools, appliances and electronic equipment, to prevent damage from a power surge when power is restored. Power can be restored more easily when there is not a heavy load on the electrical system. • If the power goes out while you are cooking be sure to turn off the stove and clear the burners and oven to prevent a fire when power is restored. • Don't open your freezer or fridge unless it is absolutely necessary. A full freezer will keep food frozen for 24 to 36 hours if the door remains closed. • Never use charcoal or gas barbecues, camping heating equipment, or home generators indoors or in garages. They give off carbon monoxide. Because you can't smell or see it, carbon monoxide can cause health problems and is life-threatening. • Stay at least 10 meters away from any downed power lines. If you see a downed power line, call Nova Scotia Power at 1-877-428-6004. • Do not remove branches near a power line as the line may be energized and can cause serious harm. • Use proper candle holders. Never leave lit candles unattended and keep them out of reach of children. Always extinguish candles before going to bed. • Listen to your battery-powered or wind-up radio for information on the outage and advice from authorities. PLANNED POWER OUTAGE - JANUARY 19 at 7:30pm
Due to the storm, Nova Scotia Power has discovered that a planned outage is required to remove a tree leaning heavily on a transmission line outside of our area. Mahone Bay, Riverport, Lunenburg, and the surrounding areas will all experience this outage to safely remove the tree. The planned outage will begin at 7:30pm today, lasting approximately 15-30 minutes.… At a Special meeting of Council this morning, January 9th 2026, the resignation of Councillor Twanow was formally accepted. In order to comply with Municipal Electoral legislation and facilitate the election of an additional Councillor, the period for accepting nominations is now changed to January 9th - January 20th 2026. Contact [email protected] if you have any questions.
The Town of Mahone Bay will soon begin annual care and maintenance of our street trees. This work helps keep our trees healthy and reduces safety risks for the community. Sometimes a tree may look healthy from the street but have hidden problems.
All Town trees have been assessed by a certified arborist, and a professional arbor care company has been hired to carry out the work. The work may include pruning, cabling for support, and removing dead or unsafe trees. When trees are removed, new trees will be planted so future generations can continue to enjoy a healthy urban forest. Upcoming tree work will take place in the following areas: • The Town boundary above Zwicker Lane • Main Street near Zwicker Lane to the intersection near Longhill Road and Kinburn Street • Kinburn Street to the Clairmont Street turn • Parts of Hawthorn Road • A few trees on Maple Street The final schedule is not yet confirmed, but work on street trees is expected to begin next week and be completed by the end of March. The Town values our urban forest as an important community asset and is committed to protecting and growing it. If you have questions about the tree work or would like to report a street tree you are concerned about, please contact us at [email protected] Something for the New Year's calendar: Council Café Connect!
